Dave graduated from Washburn in June 1957. He attended the University of Minnesota on a full athletic scholarship. Dave captained the U of M team and was a track and field All-American in 1961.

In 1960, Dave was undefeated in the high hurdles during the regular season, winning the Drake Relays and the Big Ten Championship and placing 2nd in a photo finish in the finals of the NCAA championships.

Invited to try out for 1960 U. S. Olympic Team, Dave was an alternate in the hurdles. During 1960 and 1961, Dave was ranked 12th in the world in the high hurdles.
