John played fullback on offense and linebacker on defense. John was named to the All-City team as a junior and senior, and was named to the All-State and Wigwam National High School All-American teams as a senior.
Basketball: Although his teams did not win any championships, John was a solid performer and a force to be reckoned with under the basket.
Baseball: Washburn was the city champion and state runner-up in 1958; the city champion and state champion in 1959; the city champion and state champion in 1960. John played shortstop, batted third and was named to the All-Tournament team in two of the three years.
